 During the production of railway axles, an initial inspection for defects and inclusions is carried out at the end of the manufacturing process – usually while the axles are still in the pre-machined state. For this purpose, the axles are inspected over their entire length using ultrasonic testing to detect production-related defects. Particular importance is placed on minimizing non-testable areas and enabling rapid changeovers due to the wide variety of axle designs. The ultrasonic testing system presented here combines the requirements of ultrasonic inspection with the demands of production transport and takes into account the enormous diversity of axle types while maintaining short testing times.

 Sophisticated design, flexible operation

The VWP-PD 2700/80-320 combines the requirements of ultrasonic testing with the demands of production transport for railway axles. At the same time, it takes into account the enormous variety of axle designs while maintaining short testing times. This sophisticated concept, precisely tailored to the key operational factors, enables flexible and highly efficient use of the testing system. Whether the axle is 0.3 m or 2.7 m long – and whether it already features surface contours or not – all variants can be reliably inspected.
The integrated 2D CAD interface also makes changeovers and adjustments to different axle geometries particularly simple, providing users with a powerful tool for the production of wheelset axles.

   Depending on the configuration, the VWP-PD 2700/80-320 uses either conventional ultrasonic testing technology with single-element probes or phased array testing technology with corresponding probes. The testing system meets the approval requirements for international high-speed rail traffic, as it complies with all relevant standards and regulations. If required, it can also be combined with the hollow axle testing system (HWP-PD 2700/30-90), creating a universal testing system for all axle types.
